Assessment of anxiety in school pupils in elementary education

Abstract

This study aimed at evaluating anxiety in elementary school students. The sample was formed by 559 students from 2nd to 9th years from public and private schools, with age ranging from 8 and 18 years and50.1% of them were female.The instrument applied wastheAnxiety Scale at School in only one collective session. The results evidenced the presence of anxiety in school context, the male gender scored more significantly than the female in three factors: generic fear, fear of evaluating situations and in total anxiety. The olderstudents group of them presented higherscores; in factors dissatisfaction and avoiding and the students into the age level to 10 years old are the ones that presented significantly lower scores. Finally, it was possible to evidence the presence of anxiety in the school context studied as an indication to a necessary interview.
