Abstract

Objectives. To evaluate the degree of compatibility of the aggregates, their optimum percentage and their design of asphalt mixture in hot and cold made with asphalt cement PEN 60/70, asphalt emulsion CSS-1HP and aggregates from the San Martin quarry.

Materials and methods. The present study was carried out in the San Martin quarry located at Kilometer 590 + 700 of the Panamericana Norte highway, following the Marshall method, obtained through tests in soil and pavement mechanics laboratories with hot and cold asphalt mixtures, With the supportof standards and parameters proposed by the MTC, ASSHTO and ASTM respectively.

Results. The optimum percentage of the hot asphalt mixture using asphalt cement PEN 60/70 has a value of 6% with a design of 55% of coarse aggregate and 45% of fine aggregate. While in the cold asphalt mixture its optimum percentage of asphalt emulsion CSS-1HP has a value of 6% with a coarse aggregate design of 55% and 45% of fine aggregate, in addition to the mixture we have a 60% emulsion Asphalt and 40% water. The stability of the hot asphalt mixture was 11817 N (1205 kg) and 10963N (1118 kg) for cold mixing.

Conclusions. The results evidence compliance with the specifications for a heavy folder and base transit as reported by the American Asphalt Institute for Marshall Design.
