A Structural, Functional, and Semantic Study of Phraseological Units in the Lyrics of the Cuban Orchestra Los Van Van: Locutions, Paremias, and Routine Formulae

This study aims to analyze the structural, functional, and semantic characteristics of phraseological units (PUs) found in the lyrics of the early albums of the Cuban orchestra Los Van Van. A qualitative analysis was conducted on a corpus of 35 lyrics from the band's first four studio albums (1969-1976). The identification and classification of PUs were based on the criteria of fixedness, idiomaticity, and institutionalization proposed by Corpas (1996), complemented by the functional classification of the Nueva Gramática de la Lengua Española (RAE, 2010). A predominance of locutions (verbal, adjectival, adverbial, conjunctive, and interjectional) was identified, along with one paremia and one routine formula. The PUs exhibit varied syntactic structures and fulfill the same syntactic function as the grammatical category they represent. Semantically, it is established that metaphor is the fundamental creative mechanism, generating semantic fields linked to interpersonal relationships, human characteristics, and attitudes. The use of phraseology in Los Van Van's lyrics not only enriches the lyrical text but also acts as a powerful marker of Cuban cultural identity, by creatively integrating colloquial speech and references shared by the community. This analysis provides a linguistic perspective to the study of popular music as a carrier and shaper of the collective imagination.
