Abstract

The purpose is to show from a discussion of the theoretical contributions of Arnold Gesell, Myrtle McGraw, Esther Thelen and Gilbert Gottlieb that the ideas of Gesell and McGraw about the continuity of development, biologically driven, give theoreticalsupport for the realization of prescriptive studies, while ideas of Gottlieb and Thelen emphasize the complexity of development, making it difficult to perform such studies.The information isimportantforthe identification of determinants ofinfant development.
