Based on bibliometrics and analytical review of the literature, a review of the state of the art of the gender pay gap phenomenon has been developed. First, a keyword search argument has been prepared in Scopus, with which the statistics of publications such as: evolution over time, types of publication, area of knowledge and countries have been elaborated; then, using ATLAS.ti, an analytical reading of the theoretical and methodological contributions and trends in the approach to the phenomenon has been carried out. It is concluded that according to the Scopus database, the subject has been dealt with since 1993, but since 2002 there has been greater interest by researchers, the publications are mainly original articles, book chapters and reviews, which are approached from the social, administrative and economic sciences, and the interest of medical sciences in recent years stands out. In the explanation of the phenomenon, there coexist classic orthodox views based on the theory of preferences and individualism and a heterodox view of social provisioning that analyzes the institutional framework that maintains wage differences and considers that the wage gap is not a natural phenomenon and, therefore, must be examined within a specific social and historical context. Finally, with respect to the factors that statistically explain the existence of the wage gap, there is convergence of several authors in the valuation of contributions by Oaxaca - Blinder and Reimers, as well as Neumark, Jhun’s decomposition and a widely used technique in statistical decomposition is quantile regression.
