Aphasias and cerebral vascular accidents frequency and clinical types

Abstract

The medical records of 180 patients with a diagnosis of Cerebral Vascular Accident (CVA), admitted to the Neurology Service of the Department of Medicine of the Hospital Belén de Trujillo, between January 1 and December 31, 2002, were reviewed. Of the 180 patients with CVA, 60 (33%) presented with aphasia. Of the 60 patients with aphasia due to CVA, 42 (70%) were ischaemic CVA and 18 (30%) haemorrhagic CVA. In the 60 patients with aphasia, the most frequent clinical forms were global aphasia, 20 patients (34%), expression aphasia or Broca's aphasia 16 (27%) and comprehension aphasia or Wernicke's aphasia 12 (20%).
