Burnout, depression and sleeping hours in nursing and medical professionals in Peru: a network analysis.

Abstract

Healthcare professionals are one of the most vulnerable groups to suffer from burnout due to situations of high work pressure, working schedules, rotating schedules, etc. This can increase the probability of suffering depression and sleep problems. However, to date, no analysis has been implemented to evaluate the interaction between burnout, depression and sleep hours in physicians and nurses in Peru. Therefore, the aim of the study was to examine the relationship between the components of burnout, depression and hours of sleep in nursing and medical professionals in Peru. Information was obtained from 2216 physicians (Mage = 45.55, SD = 11.50) and 2882 nurses (Mage = 44.63, SD = 11.09) who were administered the Maslach Burnout Inventory- Human Service Survey and the Patient Health Questionnaire-2. Network analysis was performed in R software and network invariance was calculated. The results indicated that emotional exhaustion was the central node, which correlates with depression and hours of sleep. It was concluded that hours of sleep are associated to a greater extent with emotional exhaustion, and the network was invariant according to profession.
