Exploratory Rasch Analysis of the Gender Stereotypical Beliefs and Violent Conduct Scale (GBVS)

The Gender Stereotypical Beliefs and Violent Conduct Scale (GBVS) is a psychometric instrument designed to assess stereotypical beliefs about gender-related characteristics, roles, and behaviors. This study aimed to evaluate the scale's psychometric properties through Rasch model analysis. The rating scale parameterization approach was applied to examine model fit, item and person residuals, response threshold functioning, differential item functioning (DIF) across subsamples, reliability, unidimensionality, and local independence. The sample comprised 371 male participants from Córdoba Province, Argentina, aged 21 to 65 years (M = 2.29, SD = 1.09), 32.61% of whom had no prior reports of domestic or gender-based violence. The original version of the scale exhibited poor fit, prompting modifications to improve its psychometric properties. Results indicated that a shortened version with three response categories demonstrated satisfactory fit and adequate reliability. Nevertheless, this revised version showed DIF (both uniform and non-uniform) in some items and one item with residuals requiring further revision. In conclusion, this study represents the first psychometric evaluation of the Gender Stereotypical Beliefs Scale and offers recommendations for future research to enhance its validity and reliability.
