Abstract

The general objective of this study was to determine the rhetorical figures and translation techniques used in the Spanish-English version, by Edith Grossman, of the poem Las Soledades by Luis de Góngora y Argote. The first hundred and twenty verses of Soledad Primera were analyzed. Data collection was carried out through two analysis sheets. The first one was used to identify the rhetorical figures present in both Spanish and English and to determine whether they were still present or had changed after translation. The second one was used to identify the translation techniques used. It was concluded that the most frequent rhetorical figure in Spanish was the metaphor with 21.95%, and in English, it was the periphrasis with 26.67%. Most of these figures did not change (79.03%) after translation. Finally, the most used translation technique for the rhetorical figures in this work was the variation with 35.56%.
