This descriptive research work, with case and control design, was carried out with the purpose of determining to what extent overweight - obesity is a risk factor for nephropathy in type 2 diabetic patients of Víctor Lazarte Echegaray Hospital in the city of Trujillo. The sample consisted of 51 clinical histories of type 2 diabetic patients with nephropathy (cases) and 153 clinical histories of type 2 diabetic patients without nephropathy (controls). A data collection card was used to record the patients' clinical history data regarding weight, height and BMI (Body Mass Index), as well as whether they had nephropathy or not. The analysis and processing of the data was carried out in the SPSS 22.0 program. It was found that in the group of diabetic patients with nephropathy, 37.25 %, 33.33 % and 29.41 % presented obesity, overweight and normal nutritional status respectively. For the group of diabetic patients without nephropathy, 53.59 %, 26.80 % and 19.61 % presented obesity, overweight and normal nutritional status respectively. Of those who were overweight-obese only 22.6 % had nephropathy, while of those who did not have overweight-obesity, 33.3 % had nephropathy, with Odds of 0.59 (CI 95 %; 0.28-1.21). In this way, it was found that there is no association between overweight-obesity and nephropathy in patients of Víctor Lazarte Echegaray Hospital, 2015 (p = 0.143).
