Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the degree of functional dependency in elderly people with Diabetes Mellitus 2. For this purpose, a descriptive, quantitative and cross-sectional study was carried out. The sample consisted of 175 elderly people diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus 2. The survey was used as a technique and the Barthel Index (BI) for basic activities of daily life (BADL) was used as an instrument. Among the results, it was found that from 100% of the elderly population, 36% were independent, 63% had some degree of mild to severe dependency and only 1% had total dependency, according to age for BADL. The group with the highest dependency with 100% is the one with 80 years of age and over, with respect to sex, the most dependent group was women with 64%. The study concluded that mild dependency predominates, it is more frequent in women, and there is a greater level of dependency in elderly people over 80 years of age.
