The frequency and antimicrobial susceptibility of Proteus mirabilis was determined in patient with urinary tract infections, treated at the “Hospital Belén de Trujillo”, in 2009. A total of 111 urine samples was evaluated, obtained by harvesting technique clean and planted on selective and differential media for isolation of Enterobacteriaceae. To the compatible isolates with Proteus genus was realized identification tests for P. mirabilis, obtaining a 6.31% positivity. By age group this microorganism is presented with a 14.29% in young patients of 15 years, 42.85% from 15 to 50 years and 28.57% in patients over 50 years, while by sex P. mirabilis was presented in 28.57% and 71.43% in men and women. The Kirby-Bauer method was realized on the antimicrobial susceptibility, using Mueller-Hinton medium and using antimicrobial discs recommended by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute. P. mirabilis had a sensibility of 100% to gentamicin and imipenem, 71.43% to cephalothin, amoxicillin/clavulanate, ceftriaxone and ciprofloxacin, and 28.57% to ampicillin and trimethoprim /sulfamethoxazole. It was concluded that P. mirabilis had a low frequency to cause urinary tract infections and high sensibility to gentamicin and imipenem antimicrobial.
