Abstract

The objective of the present investigation was to determine if family dysfunction and family violence are risk factors associated with puerperal depression in patients treated at the Regional Hospital of Cajamarca during 2014. A prospective, cross – sectional, and prospective study was developed. A sample of 144 puerperal women (48 with puerperal depression and 96 without puerperal depression). It was found that the frequency of family violence in patients with puerperal depression (PD) was 47,8 %, and in those without PD, 18,8 % (OR = 3,7, p value = 0,01, CI: 95 %: 1,7 – 7,9). The frequency of family dysfunction in patients with PD was 72,9 % and in the puerperal women without PD, 25 % (OR = 8,1, p value = 0,000, CI: 95 %: 3,7 – 17,7). The frequency of family dysfunction and family violence in patients who presented and did not have PD was 39,5 % and 10,4 % respectively (OR = 5,6, p value = 0,000, CI: 95 %: 2,3 – 13,5). It was concluded that family violence and family dysfunction, as well as the occurrence of both, are risk factors for puerperal depression.
