The return of mothers to work or study is a barrier to the continuity and duration of breastfeeding in absence of policies and strategies to promote it. The availability of breastfeeding friendly rooms contributes to the protection of this practice by having a space for the extraction and conservation of breast milk. A narrative review was carried out in order to highlight the importance of breastfeeding friendly rooms in educational institutions. Virtual Health Library, Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, JAMA Network, Open gray, Ovid Nursing, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus and Springer Link databases were consulted between June and August 2020. The CASPe and STROBE tools were used for the selection of twelve relevant studies. Research articles on the subject were included in the context of educational institutions, published between 2015 and 2020, available in full text in English and Spanish, were included. In the absence of lactation rooms in educational institutions, women must use inappropriate places for expressing and storing milk, which affects the experience and duration of breastfeeding. Criteria such as availability, physical and information accessibility, equipment and privacy of the rooms, are aspects of great relevance. Breastfeeding friendly rooms in educational institutions aim to promote and protect this practice, enabling women to combine their role as mothers and students or workers, without being forced to suspend it early.
