Epistemology and ontology are philosophical disciplines that allow us to understand scientific thinking. Physiology has developed thanks to the philosophical and scientific interaction, from ancient Greek doctors to modern physiologists, such as Claude Bernard, and contemporaries. Our science uses systemic thinking, elucidated thanks to von Bertalanffy's General System Theory, and has developed to a systemic – complex – interpretative approach.
