Post–surgical complications in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus

Abstract

Objective: To identify the post-surgical complications in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) at the Hospital de Apoyo Chepén during the months of May to July 2018. Material and Methods: A descriptive - cross-sectional study was carried out, involving 220 patients, of which 80 had a diagnosis of DM2. Results: 55 % of the patients presented post-operative complications, 75 % were in the 51-60 age group and the female sex predominated with 70 % of cases. 37 % of the surgical complications were evidenced in the emergency surgeries, compared to the elective surgeries that reached 18% and, in order of priority of postoperative complications, first, postoperative wound wall infection was registered with 25 %, followed by partial wound dehiscence in 20 %, presence of seromas in 6 % and pneumonia in 4 %. Conclusion: Patients suffering from DM2 have a high index of presenting postoperative complications that the surgeon must be aware of.
