This paper seeks to be an orientation for the teaching task in secondary school, so the notes apparatus will be reduced to the minimum necessary. As for the commentary itself, we will try to avoid three frequent errors: non-interpretation, for although poetry is to feel, it is no less true that in a poem there is always something to understand; The explicitness of what is obvious and over-interpretation. The aim of this article is to analyze, in a relevant text Vallejo’s production, three constant themes in the poet’s work: first, the loneliness that follows the death of loved ones. Then, the triple symbolic-biological / economic, affective and metaphysical value of food and, finally, the use - in the profane and heterodox sense - of categories of Catholic liturgy and theology. It also seeks to show that the reference to Catholic elements in the work of the poet from Santiago de Chuco does not enable us to affirm that he is a “Christian poet” because of the enormous distances between this poetic discourse and Catholicism, at least in his Orthodox dogmatic formulation.
