Objective: To demonstrate that advanced age, prolonged hospital stay, use of invasive procedures, previous use of antibiotics, comorbidity and female gender are risk factors for the development of urinary tract infection by extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli in hospitalized adults. Hospital II Chocope – EsSalud. 2015. Materials and methods: Cases and controls. The population consisted of 267 hospitalized adults of both sexes with risk factors for the development of ESBL-producing and non-producing Escherichia coli urinary tract infection during January 1 – December 31, 2015. Results: Older age (OR = 0,61, CI: 0,38 – 1,08, p= 0,099), prolonged hospital stay (OR= 1,15, CI: 0,68 – 1,93, p= 0,59), use of procedures invasive (OR= 1, CI: 0,8 – 1,6, p> 0,05), previous use of antibiotics (OR= 1,023, CI: 0,62 – 1,7, p= 0,93), comorbidities (OR= 1,22, CI: 0,73 – 2,04, p=
0,43) and female gender (OR= 1,09, CI: 0,39 – 2,98, p= 0,866). Conclusions: Of the six factors mentioned above, none was found to be significant for urinary tract infection by ESBL-producing E. coli in hospitalized adults.
