Abstract

In this paper we study the effect of carrageenan from Gigartina chamissoi on the concentration of serum cholesterol in humans over 25 years. The methodology for this study was based on random selection of two groups of 15 patients each, with control and experimental group respectively, both with patients diagnosed with high cholesterol (> 240 mg / dl). The control group was given a diet plan without carrageenan, whereas the experimental group's diet was supplemented with 750 mg of carrageenan per day for 30 days. Upon completion of the meal plan for both groups during 30 days was observed in the control group decreased to 5869 mg / dl and the experimental group to 80.68 mg / dl (Table 2), and there is a very significant difference in both groups (p < 0.05). Also found that 86.67% of the patients fed diets supplemented with carrageenan spent their high cholesterol levels to normal levels (175.08 mg / dl). This allows us to conclude that carrageenan from Gigartina chamissoi has the effect of reducing plasma levels of total cholesterol and thus giving an alternative solution to the treatment of hypercholesterolemia in people who have it.
