The present study was conducted to determine the maternal risk factors associated with preterm delivery, which occurs between 20 and 37 weeks of pregnancy. It was used a retrospective, case-control design of 70 patients per group (preterm and term), the variables were evaluated through the chi-square test or Fisher's exact test when the expected frequencies were less than 5, statistic association was considered for a p value < 0.05 with a confidence interval of 95%. The odds ratio (OR) was the stadigraph used. The results regarding the development of preterm delivery with an antecedent of preterm delivery (p = 0,0048; OR = 7,0345), inadequate prenatal care (p = 0,0038; OR = 4,8889), premature placental abruption (p = 0,0014; OR = 8,5), bacterial vaginosis (p = 0,0003; OR = 4,0702) and urinary tract infection (p = 0,0020; OR = 2,9688). It was established that an antecedent of preterm delivery, inadequate prenatal care, premature placental abruption, bacterial vaginosis and urinary tract infection are risk factors associated with the development of preterm delivery.
