Relationship between family dysfunction and anxiety disorder and suicidal ideation in schoolchildren

Abstract

It was determined whether family dysfunction and anxiety disorder were related to suicidal ideation in schoolchildren attended in the comprehensive health office of the Francisco Lizarzaburu Educational Institution in the district of El Porvenir in 2018. The study was correlational in a sample of 237 students to whom the family Apgar test, the Hamilton anxiety test and the Beck test of suicidal ideation were applied. It was found that the prevalence of family dysfunction was 43.5%, while suicidal ideation was 13.1% and anxiety 11.4%. A weak positive relationship was found between family dysfunction and suicidal ideation (Cramer’s V = 0.140; p = 0.032). Furthermore, there is a weak positive relationship between anxiety and suicidal ideation (Cramer’s V = 0.294; p = 0.000). It is concluded that family dysfunction and anxiety disorder are related to suicidal ideation in schoolchildren.
