Abstract

The psychometric properties of the Psychological Maltreatment Woman Inventory (Tolman, 1989) were analyzed in a sample of 331 women in Puerto Malabrigo which was selected by non-probability sampling. The construct validity was explored through the discriminant analysis, finding that the instrument components have corrected item-test indexes above .34, except for item 41 that was removed due to having obtained an inverse correlation index and due to sociocultural factors. The second method for determining construct validity was the confirmatory factor analysis of second order, finding that the theoretical model proposed by the author of psychological abuse is reproduced. Reliability for internal consistency yielded a Cronbach Alpha index for the total scale of .972, .953 for dominance isolation subscale and .944 for emotional verbal abuse. Also typical T standards were developed by marital status for finding significant differences between married and cohabiting women. Thus we conclude that the inventory shows adequate psychometric characteristics for the studied population.
