Psychometric evidence of a competing factor-conceptual model of the ambivalent sexism inventory in Brazilians

Abstract

Studies in Brazil and other countries understand that sexism construct is a set of stereotypes that assesses cognitive, affective and attitudinal the appropriate social role aimed at individuals according to sex, this, is organized through hostile and benevolent sexism; but, based on the theoretical perspective of sexism, is proposed a hierarchical factor structure, organized by second-order factors. This study aims to verify a concurrent factor structure of the ambivalent sexism. 795 subjects, aged 18 to 47 years, the secondary and higher levels of private and public education in the city of João Pessoa - PB answered the Ambivalent Sexism Inventory and socio-demographic data. Through confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling, was observed the hierarchical factor structure compared other structures, revealed best psychometric indicators. That sexism is evident are measured by subcomponents of heterosexuality, gender difference and paternalism.
