Culle words in César Vallejo´s poetry

Abstract

For several decades, the presence of words and syntactic structures of the Quechua language has been observed in César Vallejo´s poetry. In this paper, it is a question of evidencing the presence of Culle words in the verses of the above-mentioned poet. Vallejo was born in Santiago de Chuco, a city located in the Andean mountains of La Libertad, within the nuclear area of the Culle language-ancestral language spoken in the northern highlands of Peru. During the second half of the fifteenth century, this region had already been converted into a multilingual zone due to the presence of Mitimaes, who had been sent there as a result of the Inca conquest. Two toponyms (place names), a verb of uncertain meaning up until now and a noun have been found. They are irrefutable evidence of the Culle substratum in modern Spanish from that region. Obviously then, that language must have nourished the language of the poet.
